Breast Augmentation Overview
Breast Augmentation, also referred to as breast enlargement or breast enhancement, is a surgical procedure performed to give breasts a more proportional and aesthetic appearance. It is common for women to be self-conscious of their breasts and sense of femininity, and a breast augmentation procedure can impart or restore a woman’s body image and confidence.
Insufficient breast volume can start right after puberty or may happen after pregnancy, breastfeeding or major weight loss. Pregnancy, with or without breastfeeding, can cause breasts to lose volume and may not return to the size they once were. Weight loss also can result in the loss of fullness in your breasts, which can also be corrected with breast augmentation. After moderate to massive weight loss it will also be necessary for you to have a breast lift, which is also known as Mastopexy. This is usually performed at the same time as the breast augmentation which will result in larger, fuller breasts.
Considerations Before Breast Augmentation
Dr. Kayastha offers both silicone and saline breast augmentation, but the most important thing to think about is what your goals are and there are many common questions you should consider before undergoing a breast augmentation.
1. Do you want to be larger or just fill out the upper part of your breasts?
2. Are your breasts uneven in size? Will breast implants make them more symmetrical?
3. Is your skin tight or loose? Age, weight gain and loss and pregnancy are some factors that make your skin loose.
4. How much breast tissue do you have? This can affect the placement of the breast implants.
5. Do your breasts sag? Do you also need to consider a breast lift?
Size vs. Volume
Although breast augmentation is often sought out to increase the size of the breasts, some women are more concerned with the shape of their breasts. If your breasts tend to hang lower on your chest, you may want to consider implants to give more volume to the top of the breasts. The shape and volume following surgery usually depends on your breasts’ natural shape and the size of the implants themselves.
Because gravity influences the way the breasts hang, the fullness of the upper breast will gradually diminishes over time. In some cases, a breast lift may be used in conjunction with breast augmentation to make the breasts rest higher on the chest. Having a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Kayastha perform your breast augmentation goes a long way towards giving you the amount of fullness in the upper breast that you desire.
Asymmetry Breast Augmentation
Having one breast slightly larger than the other is not uncommon, and many women have breasts that are so similar in size that the asymmetry is negligible. While breast augmentation can be used to achieve greater symmetry in women whose breasts are noticeably disproportionate in size and shape, it can present unique challenges during surgery. Each woman’s anatomical state has to be carefully considered before breast augmentation can be performed. Volume, nipple position, and even possible chest wall deformity can all affect the outcome of breast augmentation.
Dr. Kayastha can adjust the volume and placement of your implants during the breast augmentation procedure to help you achieve better symmetry. It is important to understand what is realistically achievable depends upon the size and shape of your breasts prior to the procedure. During your consultation, you will be given the opportunity to “try on” different implants to get an idea about what your final results will look like. 4-dimensional imaging and other state-of-the-art technology can be used to let you see yourself with your new breasts.
The skin on your breasts loses elasticity over time as a result of excessive weight loss or weight gain, pregnancy, or natural aging. Typically, sagging of the breasts causes the skin to stretch and lose its natural tightness. In other cases, loss of volume leaves behind loose, excess skin. While a breast lift can be used to tighten the skin for a more attractive and youthful appearance, a breast augmentation fills up the excess or loose skin to give the breasts more volume. This is optimal for increasing the size of the upper pole, or top portion, of the breasts. A breast lift may be used in conjunction with this procedure to help the breasts sit higher on the chest.
Breast augmentation is designed to enhance the size of your breasts, but each individual’s results will depend on where they started in terms of breast size. A woman who has more breast tissue prior to surgery will require a smaller implant to achieve the same outcome as a woman who started with less breast tissue. In other words, a woman with a B cup will require a smaller implant than a woman with an A cup if they both want to end up with a C cup. A variety of other factors – including your weight, height, etc. – can also affect your final results. It is important to remember that breast augmentation is a highly individualized procedure.
Breast sagging can be caused by a number of factors, including weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and aging. This is usually caused by a weakening of the ligaments that attach the breasts to the muscles of the chest wall. As with loose or excess skin, sagging breasts can be restored to their youthful appearance through breast augmentation, a breast lift, or both. Women who preferred the look of their breasts during pregnancy to the way they looked after pregnancy should consider breast implants with their breast lift.
In many cases a breast augmentation alone can deliver the results sought by a breast lift. While this is particularly true for women with slight sagging, there are advantages to having both a breast lift and breast augmentation performed at the same time. Because the implants are usually placed beneath the chest wall, they contribute little to future sagging. In addition, the recovery time from a combination procedure is the same as either procedure performed alone or separately.
